Design Labs

The Department's Laboratory System represents the largest international center of technological infrastructure to support research and teaching in the field of design. It consists of four instrumental laboratories occupying a total area of more than 6,000 square meters, providing equipment and expertise to support research, design and prototyping activities in the various fields of design.

Constantly expanding and updating, the Laboratories provide a vital link between research and education. Through advanced equipment and instruments, they allow supporting experimental activities in teaching. Thanks to specialized technical staff and in collaboration with faculty and researchers, they also support experimental research conducted in the Department and offer external partners technical services for the design, prototyping and testing of new products, solutions and systems.

Research and teaching services

The Design Labs support the Department's Professors and researchers in activities and projects that require specific experimentation and instrumentation.
The Labs accommodate some experimental teaching activities organised by the School of Design.
They are also available for free access by students holding a licence to use them safely.

To obtain admission to the Design Labs, training in safe use is mandatory and consists of 2 necessary steps:

  • Passing the Online Course on Safety in Design Labs.

The Online Course on Safety in the Design Department's Labs is a prerequisite for access to the Fashion and Patternmaking/Prototyping Labs training and allows direct access to the Image Lab. It is available on your personal page at by following the path: Online Services, Data, Training Courses, Online Course on Safety in the Laboratories of the Department of Design.

  • Laboratory training with booking via Affluences APP (from October 1°)

Before the training, it is mandatory to have passed the Online Course and to have seen the illustrative video including covid19 instructions available at the link that will be sent by email as confirmation of booking via app. The training in the Fashion and Fittings/Prototypes Workshops with a practical check on the machines will last 30 minutes and it is necessary to arrive with closed shoes, a passport photo and an identity document. At the end of the training you will be given an identification card.

Communication Design students interested in access to LabImmagine may request their badge by sending an e-mail to and collect it from Lab Immagine after passing the Online Course.

Business services

High-profile equipment and expertise are available to companies, bodies and associations for the design, prototyping and testing of a proof of concepts, products, solutions and systems in the main areas of design application: from textiles-fashion to exhibition systems, interiors and furnishings; from image production and multimedia to the experimentation of technologies for digital manufacturing and digitization of products and services.
