Is a community capable of reflecting on itself? This volume attempts to answer this question by focusing on the experience developed at the Politecnico di Milano over the last thirty years, proposing a reflection on communication design and its centrality, on the transformations that have characterised it and that still today constitute the distinctive feature of this laboratory of transition that it interprets.

The aim of this collection of essays is to give an account of the evolutionary path of communication design, which has seen the continuous reconfiguration of a field of design knowledge originating in the graphic-visual sphere, to reflect on the boundaries of the discipline and to take stock of what has been produced: the lines of research traced, the implications they have within a framework that has always been in flux.
