Events to discover the principles of Good Design

Dieter Rams - A glance at the past and the future

18 May 2023 — 2 minutes read

On the occasion of the exhibition “DIETER RAMS - A glance at the past and the future”, which will be held at the ADI Design Museum from 4 May to 11 June 2023, with the contribution of the DeLonghi Group, the School of Design of the Politecnico di Milano is organising a number of collateralevents to help visitors discover Dieter Rams and the principles of Good Design.

"In the second half of the 20th century, German designer Dieter Rams (born on May 20, 1932) designed over 350 products for Braun and the furniture company Vitsoe. His products have been - and continue to be - used daily by hundreds of thousands of people worldwide, and his designs still have a significant influence on young designers. Rams was not only interested in the form of everyday objects but also reflected extensively, in many conferences and publications, on the meaning of such products for both the user and society as a whole. In an era where resource conservation and environmental protection have become the primary challenges for humanity, Rams' work is more relevant than ever. It represents an approach to design that he himself has defined as "less, but better." As early as the 1970s, Rams consistently advocated for designing objects in a way that allows for their longest possible use.
How should our world be designed in the future so that it can still survive?".

Taking inspiration from these prompts, which are found in the exhibition's presentation document "Dieter Rams - A glance at the past and the future", the Design School has organized a series of collateral events and a challenge designed to provide innovative responses to these themes that have now become relevant and are effectively transforming our perception of the future as well as the way we approach design.

On Friday, May 5, starting at 2:30 pm, Klaus Klemp, Director of the Dieter and Ingeborg Rams Foundation, held a seminar to introduce the Exhibition and discuss the figure of Dieter Rams with the students of the Design School. The event provided an opportunity to reflect on Dieter Rams' principles and his impact on the products we use today, with the possibility of direct interaction with Klaus Klemp.

On May 22, 2023, starting at 6:00 pm, at the ADI Design Museum, there will be a talk with the Design Directors of different brands within the DeLonghi Group (Markus Orthey, Braun; Dario Grasselli, DeLonghi; Samuele Meda, Kenwood), with the presence of Nicola Serafin, General Manager of the DeLonghi Group. The discussion will revolve around the design DNA of each brand, the role of design and designers in contemporary businesses, and a reflection on which competencies and skills are most promising for future designers.

On May 23, 2023, at the ADI Design Museum, and on May 26, 2023, at the Politecnico di Milano, Bovisa campus, classroom B2.0.1, at 2:30 pm, there will be a unique and free screening of the film "Rams" directed by Gary Hustwit (USA 2018).

In addition to attending the events, students participating in the PIA will need to complete a challenge that includes:
- Identifying one or two products currently on the market that can be attributed to the principles of Good Design.
- Defining one or two new design principles, meaning statements that can integrate or establish the principles of a renewed design.

An initiative curated by Venanzio Arquilla, Luisa Collina and Francesco Zurlo.
