Light and Color Perception Lab
Website's ProjectThe LUCE laboratory, in operation since 2002, deals with all aspects of light, colour and their perception. LUCE carries out applied design research in collaboration with companies and professional studios in the sector, and also makes an important contribution to the lighting market, carrying out on-site or field tests for innovative projects in the field of light and colour.
The multidisciplinary team of designers, engineers and architects makes it possible to address the transversality of light and colour design issues.
The research activities carried out over the years cover the following topics:
- Design and optimisation of lighting products; study and verification of luminaires and lighting systems using dedicated software, evaluation of spectral component, colour rendering, optical systems and thermal dissipation.
- Measurements in the laboratory or on site; study of the optical and spectral performance of luminaires. Measurement tests on lighting systems and verification of compliance with key design standards using portable instrumentation.
- Research into the interaction of light with people; research into the interaction of light with people from a psychological and physiological point of view. Research into principles and technologies for improving living and working conditions in traditional and non-traditional spaces through control and networked lighting.
- Lighting design in built spaces; lighting design of indoor and outdoor spaces requiring special precautions and compliance with regulations.
- Lighting design for the enhancement of cultural heritage; lighting for the enhancement of museums, monumental complexes, archaeological sites and cultural heritage spaces.
- Virtual lighting prototyping; the use of software tools to predict lighting design and virtualise spaces. These processes enable accurate lighting designs and extend their use by creating a digital copy that can be visited virtually.
The disciplines of light and colour, lighting design and the visual perception of spaces are addressed in numerous areas such as exhibitions, retail, hospitality, urban environment, entertainment, products, cultural heritage, residential areas, care spaces and many more.
LUCE carries out research, teaching and consultancy activities in a wide range of fields, thanks to the expertise and tools at its disposal.
