The San Siro neighbourhood is characterised by a strong multiculturalism, often associated with a poor knowledge of the Italian language and major integration difficulties, as well as a lack of places for socialisation and inclusion, especially for young people.

The appreciation of Off Campus San Siro (OCSS) in the neighbourhood demonstrates the value of proximity and the need for spaces and activities that aim to reduce marginalisation and loneliness.
The Hub dei Talenti desk, opened by the Università Statale di Milano at OCSS to promote orientation to work and education/training paths for young people, has shown that many minors from families with a low socio-educational level encounter considerable difficulties in learning processes.

The Don Gnocchi Foundation (FDG) is also present in the neighbourhood with a Neuropsychiatry and Neurorehabilitation Operating Unit for Children and Adolescents, which is engaged in the diagnosis and treatment of neurodevelopmental disorders, due not only to disabilities, but also to linguistic, cultural and social barriers, often linked to poverty of experience.

However, care does not reach everyone who needs it, it focuses on the individual and is delivered in health facilities that many people perceive with distrust.
Taking into account the competences and experiences of the two poles in the neighbourhood and the proximity of various educational institutions, the IN BIBLIO, Polisocial Award 2024, aims to build inclusive libraries, neighbourhood spaces where reading and storytelling become an experience of growth and aggregation for children with different fragilities. These spaces are designed to be sustainable, accessible and flexible.

IN BIBLIO foresees:

  • the design and realisation of made-to-measure structures and furniture that can be modified according to needs and used for outdoor activities aimed at the community;
  • the production of inclusive books.
    the development of technological supports that transform storytelling into an immersive experience;
  • the setting up of two indoor spaces that can serve as prototypes for other interventions.

Through these initiatives the intention is:

  • to break down linguistic, cultural and social barriers, making reading an accessible experience for all;
  • promote opportunities for socialisation and aggregation, valuing diversity;
  • monitor treatment needs related to neurodevelopmental disorders.

Scientific Coordinator of the Project is Lorenza Petrini from DICA, Project Manager for the Department of Design is Giulia Gerosa.
Also involved are Sara Donzelli from DICA, Simone Baccaglini from DASTU and Alessandro Colombo, Mattia Gianotti and Matteo Secco from DEIB.
