Making the shift from linear narratives to complex, system-driven storytelling is essential for crafting immersive game experiences that captivate and engage. The talk will explore the transformative power of modular thinking in storytelling within the gaming world. Drawing upon examples from renowned games such as Dwarf Fortress and Moon Hunters, the intricacies of character writing and development will be analysed in-depth. The session will introduce the concept of Orthogonality in character traits, their expressions, and the art of prioritizing various types of character information, serving as a comprehensive metaphor for all aspects of system-driven writing.
